Leave the original intact
An Afterimage field note about why keeping the original gives people more confidence to experiment.
Creative freedom depends on the confidence that a strange choice does not erase the path home.
“Non-destructive” can sound like an implementation detail: keep the original file safe and make edits reversible. But the deeper effect is psychological. When the original is safe, experimentation becomes less expensive. A person can push an image too far, compare modes, assemble fragments, abandon a direction, and return without treating every gesture as a commitment.
Afterimage begins with that promise. Imported media remains source material. Transformations produce derived states. Comparisons explain the difference. Export creates a result without quietly replacing its origin.
Provenance should be understandable
Preserving bytes is not enough if the person cannot understand what happened. A source-preserving tool should make the lineage legible:
- This is the original.
- This is the current interpretation.
- These pieces came from these sources.
- This export is a new artifact.
The same principle appears elsewhere in the Lab. Foundry keeps ordinary Hugo and Markdown source beneath a managed editing experience. A migration should preserve what it captured and reveal what it changed. An experiment log should not rewrite an old hypothesis after the result arrives.
Source preservation is not nostalgia for the untouched original. It is infrastructure for bolder transformation.
The design consequence
The interface cannot rely on hidden safety. It has to communicate it. People should know when they are viewing a source, a working state, a comparison, or an export. Undo should be exact where promised. Storage should behave like a creative project rather than a disposable filter session.
The test is not whether the software can preserve the original. The test is whether the person feels free because it does.
