Leonardo’s notebooks moved freely between bodies, water, wings, machines, proportion, and light. Labs follows that same permission to connect disciplines: observe carefully, draw the mechanism, build the smallest real thing, and let the result change the question.

Observe

Begin with something human that technology has made awkward, opaque, stale, or unnecessarily fragile.

Imagine

Let the idea cross boundaries before deciding what category, interface, or business it is supposed to become.

Make

Turn the sketch into an experience someone can actually see, touch, question, and use.

Revise

Keep the source, the evidence, and the unanswered questions visible enough to change course honestly.

Study 01 · Bluedoor · Protected prototype + founding-circle research

What if the plan came before the small talk?

Bluedoor begins with a real Invitation—a place, a time, and something worth doing—then gives two people a private way to make the yes mutual. It is an experiment in moving human connection out of the feed and into the world.

The threshold is the product metaphor: not browsing people, but choosing whether to step into a real possibility.

What if creative software left the original intact?

Afterimage explores a source-preserving image practice: import, transform, compare, assemble, and export without confusing experimentation with destruction. The interface should invite play while keeping the lineage of the work understandable.

Source → layer → transformation. The original remains; the possibilities multiply.

Study 03 · EventDatabase · Discovery foundation; live ingestion next

What if local discovery could admit when information is stale?

EventDatabase treats time, place, source, and freshness as part of the product—not cleanup work hidden behind a calendar. The aim is regional discovery that can distinguish a real current occurrence from a copied event-shaped rumor.

A venue is not an event. A listing is not a date. A date is not trustworthy without a source and a refresh path.

What if expressive websites stayed operationally dependable?

Foundry separates visual invention from fragile ownership. Portable Hugo and Markdown source carry the public experience; governed components, validation, search, intake, releases, and recovery keep the work usable after the reveal.

What if owners could change the site without surrendering the source?

Foundry Control investigates a managed layer for editing, preview, review, publishing, intake, and recovery. It should make a complex operating path understandable without turning the portable site into a proprietary hostage.

A useful control surface reveals decisions, differences, and recovery—not only buttons.

How to read the notes

Five marks in the margin.

Question: An observation that is still opening the work.
Experiment Log: A belief made specific enough to test.
Field Note: A principle or decision discovered while making.
Revision: A belief changed by the evidence, including useful failure.
Marginalia: A fragment, sketch, or unresolved thought worth keeping.

Applied work · Ideas operating in the world

The workshop is tested by what survives outside it.

Client and partner work sits apart from the experiments. These are places where positioning, visual judgment, publishing discipline, inquiry, and ongoing care had to work for someone other than the inventor.
